    Moonan Flat 2018

    3DAAA NSW State Series

The 20th Anniversary of the Moonan Flat 3D Classic was held over the long weekend of the 29th and 30th of  September 2018, Proudly sponsored by the Victoria Hotel Moonan Flat and Klosters Hamilton.

108 shooters and their families turned up for the event bringing with them a slight drizzle of rain which the farmers were pleased with.

As Saturday morning dawned the drizzling rain continued as shooters started to head out to 5 testing ranges. Little did they know that Grant and the other range setters had a few surprises in store for them.

One such shot was the rising boar on D range which was shot down hill, through a tunnel cut through a peppercorn tree.

Another was the croc on A range shooting down hill off a ledge leaving nothing to pick distance off, this certainly made a few scratch their heads and there wasn’t many tens shot on this target , however there were quite a few misses.

Saturday afternoon saw Brad Wilkinson finishing the day with the highest score 289 which was quite a effort considering the ranges in place. Then it was time for the running of the Top Ten sponsored by Klosters,Congratulations went to Dustyn Oloman who eventuated the winner.

All top ten competitors had 1 arrow closest to the centre for $100 prize money up for grabs Thanx to Klosters, this was won by Joanne Bogie.

Then the customary dip in the freezing Moonan River was to come, just lucky there was a bit of water in the river or it could have been a bit rocky, and so entered Dustyn and Joanne. Dustyn stripping down to his jocks much to the amusement of the crowd, but Joanne was a bit more conservative leaving her clothes on.

A mentoring talk followed the Top Ten for those who wanted to listen to Greg Scott, Dustyn Oloman and Grant Elsley.

On Sunday as the sun started to rise over the mountains the archers started to head out. Josh Shone (MBR) managed to finish Sunday with a perfect round of 200 which was an amazing effort.

With a great weekend coming to a end there were still a surprise to come at Presentation with Cessnock Archers acknowledging the 3 archers who have shot all 20 Moonan Flat shoots, Jock Thompson , Simon Gallen and Mark Elliot.

Grant Elsley was surprised to be acknowledged for being the only Cessnock Archers member who has attended all 20 years, Grant didn’t always shoot this event but he was always hard at work behind the scenes running the event with setting ranges to score recording, our club cannot thank him enough for all the hard work he does behind the scenes.

Senior Winner for the weekend was James Bush with a score of 479

Junior Winner for the weekend was Ethan Wilkinson with a score of 461

    100’s -James Bush

    200’s – Josh Shone

A huge thank you to our amazing land owners without them the event would not happen, and with 20 years of support some beautiful hand made trophies were handed out to them, the Garland Family, the Collison Family, the Haynes family and the Rodeo committee, thanx to Daniel Ross.

Thank you to our Major sponsors, The Victoria Hotel Moonan Flat and Klosters Hamilton.

Thank you to the Upper hunter Shire Council for ensuring the camp grounds were clean and extra bins were out for our camper, and for the donation to help out our club for the shoot.

    Thank you to our other sponsors;

Ten Zone Archery, Bohning, Lakes Disposals, Abbey Archery, Hair by Ali, Bunnings

To all the Archers and their families that attended thank you, without your support there would be no shoot.

Hope to see you all next year for the 21st Moonan Flat 3D Classic

  • Gladstone 2018

    Gladstone 2018

    3DAAA Queensland State Series

The Gladstone Field Archer’s event was held on 22nd to 23rd of September 2018.

There were   62 registered competitors,  plus associated visitors / family.

We had people attend from all areas of QLD and NSW,  so we thank  everyone who made the journey to our club, as we know it is a fair distance to travel.

The weather was great for shooting, and we had set up 3 x 10 target ranges on Saturday and 2 x 10 target ranges on Sunday.  Everyone enjoyed the ranges which had varying degree’s of difficulty  over the different terrain we have at our club. While there were no 100’s awarded a lot of shooters came very close.

We had bought 8 new targets from Toowoomba archery supplies,  these were the ones that were recently approved by 3DAAA,  initial reviews have seen them hold up well over the weekend shoot without any significant damage,  They came with base plates so they are free standing and are well worth looking into if your club needs some additional targets, and they are Australian made.

We were able to fire up the pizza oven on Saturday night for everyone to have wood fired pizza’s, and  it was great to see everyone enjoying the clubhouse.

Saturday night saw a novelty event put on  with knife and axe throwing.  There were two divisions, adult and juniors, it was an excellent turn out and everyone had a great time.  The knife and axe throwing turned out to be more challenging that everyone first expected.

Sunday saw the top 10 shoot out which was competitive in both the aided and unaided divisions.

A small group of travellers and club members stayed on the Sunday night, so they  could relax and travel on the Monday.

A big thankyou to  everyone who helped behind the scenes in the canteen, and  setting the ranges.

Hope to see everyone again next year for another great weekend.

  • Mornington Peninsula 2018

    Mornington Peninsula 2018

    3DAAA Victorian State Series

This was the last of the Victorian State Series for 2018 – and what a great week end at Mornington Peninsula Bowmen https://www.facebook.com/MorningtonPeninsulaBowmenArchery/ – the ranges were set with challenge and purpose to test any archer’s skill at unmarked 3D. The weather was exceptional and allowed us to work with Brett Pirlo on learning how to understand our equipment, learning how to judge distance, bow setup, speed vs accuracy, and so much more – an excellent imitative of 3D AAA through their – Mentoring Program rolled out across the states in 2018. Everyone from the kids to the adults took away snippets that they are or will be working on – the conversations went on long into the evening around the campfire & dinner. Day two saw many of us applying some of those new ideas, while some improved others needed some work as is always the case. With campsites being packed away, and the buzz of the last archers coming off the course, the MBO division had a tie for second place and the count back on 10s and 8s began, Paul Eagle & Tony Brezic were tied on 463 – final countback got Paul into second place with 6 more 10’s – Brett Pirlo in 1st place with 484. For the score results go to our new website www.3daaa.com.au

Some other comments from people at the event:

Will Ellen     Another great weekend down at Mornington 3daaa in the books, Brett Pirlo doing a great job mentoring and helping a lot of shooters out including myself👌🏻 I’m loving this Bowtech Realm x – Native 300 combo. This bow is a keeper for sure now bring on the nationals

Brett Pirlo   Mornington Peninsula 3DAAA Shoot. This place is beautiful, the Queenslander brought the sunshine to Victoria 😂.Got to catch up with these two champions, Paul Eagle and Drew Orton. What a great bunch of people I met today. Great job as always Cordell McGuire, your passion to grow archery in Victoria is inspiring.

Shaylen Lowe   I had a super weekend at Mornington 3daaa and on Saturday I shot a 92 on one of my rounds/100. Finishing the weekend on 408 and another medal 🙂. We had a special visitor Brett Pirlo who came from QLD who did a talk to us all about aiming, distance judging & shot technique. It was great! Brett & I had a shoot off on an indoor 3Daaa face at 20m. The winner DIDNT have to skull a bottle of water! On Sunday we did the shoot off and after 3 arrows we were equal so it came to a one arrow shoot off. I won! We shook hands and hugged and had a laugh. Then I got to watch Brett skull a bottle of water with everyone cheering on! I had so much fun and at the end of the day I went to Rye Pier with my archery friend Sam and jumped off into the freezing cold water we had ice cream and went home! Thank you Brett Pirlo & Justina for coming to have some fun with us! Was good to also see Mike and Chloe from NSW too! See you all at the 2018 Nationals in Nambucca!! ❤️

Mornington Peninsula Bowmen will be running one more of the one day series on the 14th of October 2018. Nationals 2018-Victorian or South Australian Archers intending to come to the Nationals in November 2018 can you advise Cordell McGuire – Liaison Officer via email vicliason@3daaa.com.au with your contact details so we can keep this group informed of things happening in Victoria and our trip to Nationals.

  • North Albert 2018

    North Albert 2018

    3DAAA Queensland State Series

Another NAFA sanctioned shoot ended successfully. All old ranges were stripped and 5 new ranges built. There were plenty of campers and nearly 100 archers even with the forecast of thunder storms and drought breaking rain (which didn`t happen). All meals were catered for with a choice of 3 different roasts and vegies for Saturday dinner. The shoot went well with lots of talk on how challenging the courses were even so we still had a couple of 100`s made. The Top Ten was a good event and some great shots made with Brett Pirlo winning Sighted and Scott Johnston winning Barebow. A big thanks to all archers who took the gamble with weather forecast and still turned up. Thanks also to the Sponsors who helped with Raffle prizes. Most of all to the team at NAFA putting in an amazing amount of work to make it happen.

See y,all here next year. Please have a look at our web site and face book page for more info and photo`s.

  • Benchmark Shootout 2018

    Benchmark Shootout 2018

    3DAAA Benchmark Shootout

The 2018 Benchmark shoot started early for Grant Elsley, Jamie Bradshaw, Robbie Vayro, Brett Pirlo and Greg Scott setting the ranges and getting the venue sorted.
The meet and greet on Friday night with Pizza at the Saloon was a great event. But the debate still rages on about using Banana as a filling on a pizza.
Saturday started with a muster and shoot groups organised and sent out to the ranges. Some great scores were handed in at the end of the shooting Saturday.
The top 10 was slightly different with everyone shooting in a last man standing format. Starting with having to shoot a 10 to stay alive, then a 12 to stay in it. It came down too Ian Summers and Ryan Corner shooting at a 14 on a small Javelina. Ian shot and missed the 14 while Ryan held his nerve and smoked the 14 to take the win.
Dinner was held in the saloon with some great entertainment, I am sure everyone is still trying to decipher Brett Pirlo’s story though.
Sunday started with a muster and peer groups sent out to the range. Once all shooters had handed there score cards back in. The shoot off placings for the top 5 in each division was sorted.
Rhys Aizlewood, Steven Bartley, Mark Corner, William Watson and Scott Hayden fought out the barebow class, with Rhys coming out on top.
In the restricted class Damien Ormiston, Stefan Ivanisevic, William Dreyer, Brad Fountain and Ryan Corner  made the shoot off, with Damien holding on for the win.
Sam Wearne, Andrea McFarlane, Mikala Shevill, Don Tomasetig and Josh Shone fought it out in the unrestricted class, Sam held on for First but some impressive shooting from the youngest in that class Mikala who edged ahead of Andrea into second place on the last arrow.
Gerard Miles, Brett Pirlo, Ben Doyle, Jock Thompson and Ian Summers fought out in the open class. Some impressive shooting from Brett Pirlo saw him edge out Gerard to take out first place.
We all learned that just because we know the distance doesn’t necessarily mean we will shoot great scores, at least with unknown distances we can blame a bad shot on our range estimation. We hope you all enjoyed the ranges and the shoot format.
The committee would like too thank all the wonderful sponsors that made this event the success it was.
And lastly to those that competed in the event you all made our efforts worth while.

    Caboolture 2018

    3DAAA Queensland State Titles

What a weekend we had at our shoot. Everything about the weekend – the ranges, the fabulous food and of course all of the awesome people that braved the cooler weather to come out and shoot and also the people that didn’t shoot and volunteered their time to help out. The guys set some very challenging courses and far out did themselves & set a very high bar for others to follow  The ladies put on some fantastic yummy tucker in the canteen. Good to see competitors travel from far & wide especially the Roma & Casino crews  Well done to everyone that came a place and good shooting to all other competitors. The Top 10 shoot off was an event not to missed with our very own Josh Smith taking out the Sighted Top 10. Well done Josh. It was his 1st Top 10 win Would like to say a big Thank You to everyone for all your support & assistance for our shoot. We were very happy with the turn out with just shy of 100 competitors. Till next time. Here are some pics from the weekend. Enjoy

  • Mendooran 2018

    Mendooran 2018

    3DAAA NSW State Series

The weekend of the 14th and 15th July 2018 will be remembered for years to come, officially Dubbo recorded it’s coldest ever day with -5.8C, the first ever sanctioned shoot for Dubbo 3D Archers and the first Castlereagh 3D Championship, hosted in Mendooran, NSW.
The weekend saw 91 shooters come to Mendooran for a winter shoot on excellent grounds. The weekend started with nominations at the Royal Hotel, Mendooran on Friday night, with old friends and newbies enjoying the country hospitality and some cracking meals. The freeze set in on the Friday night, some would say it was ‘chilly’ others would say ‘Antarctic’. Unofficial records had the range opening to the balmy temperature of -8.2C. The cold start was offset by amazing clear and windless days, plenty of warm food from the canteens and the warm friendship and camaraderie displayed throughout the weekend. The ranges were a fantastic mixture of hills, dense forest, gully’s and flat open shots, challenging the skills of ranging and shot execution.
Saturday had another first of Jenette Harvey shooting her first 100 round. With some other mentionable days, particularly for Ethan Wilkinson only dropping 6 points for the day shooting a 294/300 for Saturday. This tremendous results were capped off by the Top 10 shootoff, which was given approval to be shoot in town, across the road from the Hotel to across the creek, Alex Elvin got to choose the target and went for the jugular, setting an alligator at 41m for the shot to beat. This played out well for him, as Alex was the eventual winner of the shoot off.
Saturday night was a Pig on the spit at the Hotel and a great night had by all.
Sunday morning was slightly warmer, starting the day at -4C. Four more shooters were added to the 100 round sheet with Ian Summers, Jamie Bradshaw, Julie Evans and Norm Sager shooting perfect rounds for the day. The scores rolled. Culminating in close scores and a fantastic turn out to the presentation in the warm sunshine at the Royal Hotel, Mendooran. The results were strong with Ben Doyle coming out on top in MBO and Jo Moffitt taking FBO, the other hotly contested categories had Jamie Gilroy taking out Hunter Class and Norm Sager taking out MSR.
Dubbo 3D Archers would like to thank all our sponsors for their support, especially Caltex, the Royal Hotel, Mendooran and Butchers on Macquarie, Dubbo. Being our first shoot we are exceptionally grateful for all the words of support and advice given, and we are especially thankful
Thank you to all the travelling shooters and we look forward to our next shoot.

  • Hinterland 2018

    Hinterland 2018

    3DAAA Queensland State Series

We welcomed 98 competitors to our club for the shoot. The usual cool brisk morning with a warm gas heater and open fires at our newly renovated undercover area.
5 ranges were open making for a fairly smooth shoot and most seemed to enjoy the ranges.
Canteen was very consistent with hungry competitors for most of the two days.
The top ten was held on the Sunday to make it fair to all shooters over all the ranges.
Recurve top 10 winner was Billy Watson and Compound was Ian Ferguson. Congratulations to all the shooters. They all did a wonderful job.
5 x 100’s were given on the weekend which proved it was a fare shoot.
Hinterland had a small auction for old targets and got a good response in the bidding.
On the Sunday after the shoot and the top 10 was finalized we had presentations and the raffle. We had lots of prizes and most people got plenty of prizes each.
A big thank you to the person from another club who helped to bring in targets.
I don’t know his name but it was very appreciated.
The rain gods held off until after the presentation and after such an exhausting weekend we were blessed that everyone left without getting wet.
Hope to see everyone again next year for another great weekend.
  • Diamond Valley Archers – June 2018

Diamond Valley Archers – June 2018

    3DAAA Victorian State Series

The time came round for the second 3DAAA event to be run at Diamond Valley Archers Inc. for 2018. This also gives the course setters a chance to review the layout and the grounds from running our first event in summer to now planning to manage the ranges in now winter.
Trees and foliage change, the tracks and pathways used in summer have altered and new shot lanes can be created adding to the changes of where we place the 3D targets.
With the layouts planned, the targets checked the courses came together with the assistance of DVA team. The competitors started arriving and the day events soon began.
The ranges emphasised targets size and placement to create depth and perception combined with the use of dead ground all challenging the competitors to think of their shots and consider or reconsider that first thought of distance estimation.
Day 1 scores soon reflected this and the comments such as “that was so much closer, than I estimated it to be” “the crocodile easy enough but why an 8”, “that honey bear looked so simple, until we were getting our arrows and realised the perception of shot placement into a river bed”, “the black panther on the rock made me think twice on what I had set my sights to when looking at the target at full draw”. It was pleasing to get the feedback from the competitors across all divisions as they came in with score cards in hand and getting their lunches around the clubrooms – for one archer though getting a perfect round on the 3rd range great work Drew Orton.
With the first three rounds completed, dinner preparations made for members staying over it was time to relay the courses – team one was already out and pulling up the furthest range targets – team two comprising of some of our junior archers took to the field to learn and assist in relaying the 20 targets for the next day. It did not take these juniors long to get the idea of how to make shots interesting and challenging, add to this that each one in the team was responsible for a different component on each target created some very interesting shots for day two.
Day 2 the weather was again kind to us and the archers worked their way across the ranges easily and once again the field course was alive with comments of success and well those that were not so successful. Once again the courses delivered as promised and people came back excited about how close they came to the perfect round, how it was not their day, but all about how much fun they had working their way across the ranges. Yet again another archer took out his first perfect round of 100 – congratulations Sam Mufale
With the assistance of the new team in training results were up and finalised 30 to 40 mins earlier, and presentations & announcements were done with competitors heading home ahead of time with some staying back to practice on the target ranges and others planning their trips to the next events.
Presentations done the talk was now all about the next events – 1 day 3D back at DVA on the 29th of July 2018 during the day in the evening we will be running the 3D AAA Indoors & Twin Cities Archers will also be running 3D AAA Indoors refer to the 3D AAA website for times and details followed by the next two day event to be held on the 17th & 18th of August 2018 at Twin Cities Archers.
Some recollections of the two days from – Sam (CUBA)
At the 3D at DVA I had a good time and a good shoot claiming my first straight 100 as well as breaking my personal record. The targets set across the field were great with some challenging and difficult targets. I couldn’t have completed my straight 100 without the support of Cordell Martin and Shaylen. I had a great shoot as well as many other people. Thanks for reading Sam
Look forward to seeing you there.
  • State of Origin- Casino 2018

    State of Origin- Casino 2018

    3DAAA State of Origin

Saturday started off with a surprisingly beautiful morning with no forecast of torrential rain unlike last year, much too everyone’s relief.
Shooters set off to shoot ranges in high spirits, with a major difference in the use of land across the road, so made things a little bit more interesting.
With the finish of shooting and as per usual at the State of Origin, no top 10 held on Saturday, The AGM was held in town this year things were very quite at the range Saturday night.
Sunday arrived once again under beautiful skies, shooters set out too make up on Saturday scores, or too hold onto good form from Saturday.
The all important state of origin trophy hinges on results of all competitors, so all competitors were taking things as serious as they do. And too make the funniest of top ten shoots of the year.
The bare bowers set the scene for a great spectacle. Mark Rhinebot made the afternoon enjoyable with his absolute one eyed QLD approach which didn’t help. The sighted shooters continued the great spectacle taking over from the bare bowers.
With the help of the Cubs and junior’s the mighty Blues took the win, must have been a good omen for things too come.
After the presentation a small but eager crowd attended the mentoring program, shame the QLDers had too go back too work Monday, Which affected the numbers. Afterwards a small impromptu gathering enjoyed many tall tales around the camp fire. Look forward to seeing you all next year. Go the BLUES
